I was lucky enough to see an advanced screening last night of Christopher Nolan's hot new film INCEPTION at the Society for Composers and Lyricists. One word: holyfuckingshit!!!!
Let me just start by saying that Christopher Nolan is a master storyteller and I've sort of had a mad crush on him ever since MEMENTO. The fact that he writes and his films always sort of makes my heart flutter, plus he's really involved in the musical aspects of his film and I'm always impressed with that.
INCEPTION isn't a perfect film - I thought "OMG!" moments Nolan created in THE PRESTIGE and MEMENTO landed better than the one in this film - but let me tell you: this is a visual masterpiece, a thought-provoking piece of storytelling and a slam bang shoot 'em up adventure all at the same time. The trailer teases some of this, but when you see it as a whole, you don't get the full impact. There were moments when I wanted to cheer, to hide my eyes, to yell at the screen. It was James Bond, it was Charlie Kaufman, it was Hitchcockian.
Yeah, I really loved it. Amazing performances by Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy especially. And the questions it leaves you with...well, I'm not going to be a spoiler, but I'd love to hear your thoughts after you see it!
Hi, Gretchen! Thanks so much for this review - I'm going to see it next Friday and it sounds like just the kind of cool Nolan piece we love. (LOVED THE PRESTIGE!!!)
