Jessi Kirby is a former English teacher and librarian. She lives in Orange County, CA with her husband and two kids, where she writes stories and runs the beach every day. Well, almost every day.

ME: What are your favorite and least favorite parts of the writing "process"?

Jessi: Most favorite--the shiny new idea stage, where all I'm doing is thinking up scenes and jotting notes and it's all wide open possibility. Least favorite--drafting. Most days, that part of it is painful and slow for me. Judy Blume said it best when she talked about wishing someone could just go in and grab the first draft out of her head and plunk it down in front of her so she could start revising.

ME: What was the main inspiration for this book?

Jessi: I wanted to write a brother and sister story and look at the concept of devotion and honor, and it just kind of grew from there.

ME: Who would you cast if your book was made into a movie?

Jessi: Ooh, that's a tough one! I was picturing Taylor Swift as Honor when I wrote it, but I could also see Elle Fanning or maybe Shailene Woodley
